Small Dog and Puppy Leash Information
What To Look For in a Puppy or Dog Leash
Did you know that selecting a leash (or lead) for your dog could actually be such a puzzling process? Leashes come in many different sizes, lengths and fabrics. Which leash, or lead, is the right one for your small dog?
There are two main types of leashes. Retractables and non-Retractables. You'll find the standard Non-retractables on this page. Truth is, as long as you provide the correct collar for your dog (Read about it here) the leash is mainly aesthetic. Choose the one that matches YOUR personality as well as your dog's.
Don't forget to consider your dog's color. If you have a puppy, remember that the coat color may change, leaving you with a horrible clashing leash color. For small dogs, the strength of the leash won't play such a big role. Leashes will persevere with a small dog or puppy, but you want a leash with sturdy hardware.
Here are some tips on selecting the right leash for you and your dog:
- You should purchase a lead made of nylon, leather or chain. You'll find nylon leads in either a "cord" or a "tape" style. Either is fine.
- Find a leash that is easy for you to hold. Most leashes have a loop on the holder's end to wrap around your wrist, however some loops are too big and can easily slip over your wrist and out of your hand.
- There are plenty of leashes out there today that come with a warrantly...find one.
Never use a collar or leash to pull or yank a smaller dog unless there is imminent danger. Doing so may cause injury to the windpipe of your puppy or small dog!
Dog collars and leashes are a GREAT gift for any pet lover!
