What To Look For in a Dog Tie-Out or Trolley

The Puppy Depot does not believe in Pinch Collars, Choke Chains and the like. The dog tieouts and trolleys that you will find on this page are meant ONLY to attach to a safe dog collar. Remember, pulling or yanking a dog with a leash could cause serious (or even fatal) damage to your dog's windpipe, especially a small dog or puppy. Choke Chains and Pinch Collars can also do the same.

Do not use a tieout as a means of confinement for your dog. It is always a good idea to be present at all times when your dog is using the tie-out device and always make sure there is nothing around that your dog or puppy can wrap himself up in. Also, using a tie out must not replace walking your dog.

Tie-Outs and trolleys are great for dogs...but keep safety in mind AT ALL TIMES. Don't leave your dog unattended while attached to a tieout or trolley. They can (and will) easily become entangled on trees, swings or anything that is within the dog's roaming area. Your dog could also jump over an object and become hung on it resulting in death or serious injury.

As we always tell you, look for a sturdy product. You usually get what you pay for. The tie-out stake should be at least 16-18" long (or deep) for dog's up to 50lbs. Make sure that the stake allows for a full 360 degrees of movement without wrapping around itself.

There are two things to look at regarding the tie out cable, the "snaps" or "hook-ups" and the cable itself. You want the hook ups to be strong and thick. Looks for zinc diecast or forged iron hookups. These hookups will resist wear and tear and are resitant to rusting as well. When looking at the cable, choose one that has a crack-resistant, UV-protected vinyl or leather sheath. This will keep the underlying cable from sustaining damage from the sun and other elements. The cable should be made of galvanized steel or zinc-plated steel and should be resistant to rust and corrosion.

Never use a collar or leash to pull or yank a smaller dog unless there is imminent danger. Doing so may cause injury to the windpipe of your puppy or small dog!

Also, whenever your puppy is crated, you should take the collar off as it could get caught on the crate. Finally, get an ID tag for your dog or puppy as soon as possible.

Dog tieouts are a GREAT gift for any pet lover!
